Expectations of AACP board members
Participate in board meetings: Commit to attending, and actively participating in board meetings. We have traditionally met in person at least twice annually for a day and a half each time (in the fall and spring, in conjunction with IPS/Mental Health Services Meeting and the Spring APA meeting). (Note that AACP only reimburses up to a total of $500 per meeting, which rarely covers all travel expenses, so this is something you must be aware of and comfortable with before volunteering to be nominated.) The board also meets virtually as needed, typically for between 1-2 hours, and not more than every every 2-3 months. The formal expectation, as stated in AACP’s bylaws, is that board members are expected to be present for a minimum of two thirds of all AACP board meetings (and hopefully more).
Participate actively in at least one of the AACP (workgroups). The AACP board organizes its work through 3 core workgroups (sometimes called “planks”). These include: 1) Advocacy and Policy; 2) Connection and Collaboration, and 3) Products and Services. Each board member is expected to be active in at least one of these workgroups. This includes the expectation of participation in monthly virtual workgroup meetings.
Be a resource and spokesperson for AACP within your various circles and communities, i.e., seek opportunities to disseminate AACP activities, so as to amplify the organization’s work; and engage and attract others who you feel may benefit from AACP affiliation to become involved.
Journal Reviews: Serve as an active reviewer of AACP’s journal, the Community Mental Health Journal, if there are articles within areas of your expertise (1 review per year is the minimal expectation – with board members encouraged to average 2-4 reviews per year).
Listserve participation: Actively follow the AACP listserve and contribute as appropriate.
Mentoring: While not a formal expectation, board members are encouraged to volunteer if appropriate, to serve as mentors to members earlier in their careers.
