Hunter L. McQuistion, M.D.
Hunter L. McQuistion, MD is the Director of the Division of Outpatient & Community Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at The St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals. An AACP member since 1989, he has served on it Board of Directors since 1994 previously as an Area Representative, Treasurer, and Representative at Large.
Dr. McQuistion has held senior level policy and management positions in New York City at its Division of Mental Hygiene as well as at a community based organization offering comprehensive services for homeless adults with disabilities. He received his psychiatric training at NYU-Bellevue Medical Center, where he was also chief resident. He subsequently completed the Fellowship in Public Psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University.
Dr. McQuistion is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and is on the Voluntary Faculty of Columbia's Fellowship in Public Psychiatry. He has published, presented, and taught on issues in community mental health and the care of underserved populations, especially as they concern advocacy, clinical engagement, psychiatric rehabilitation, chemical misuse, and criminal justice. He is a recipient of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Exemplary Psychiatrist Award and is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
He has extensive experience treating people who are mentally ill, homeless, and have substance abuse problems, working in a variety of settings, including emergency departments, inpatient and outpatient environments, shelter-based therapeutic communities, housing programs, and street outreach. Dr. McQuistion has written extensively about the treatment of people who are homeless from a practical, clinically oriented perspective. He also maintains a private psychiatric practice and mental health program consultancy in New York City.
